referendum
Direct popular vote
A referendum is a direct vote by an electorate on a specific question or proposal, typically one of constitutional or political significance: The referendum on independence failed narrowly.
Governments call referenda to let citizens decide issues directly rather than through elected representatives.
The plural is referenda or referendums.
