asylum
Safe harbor status
As a physical space and in its original meaning, asylum suggests a place that is protected from invasion or violation.
Today the word sees more usage as a state of being in which someone vulnerable is protected.
If you seek asylum, the presumption is that you are currently in danger.
If you grant asylum, you are offering protection.
Asylum as a designation for a residential psychiatric facility is now dated and considered offensive.
