injunction
Legally binding directive
An injunction is a court order requiring someone to do or refrain from doing something.
Unlike money damages, it compels action: The judge issued an injunction blocking the merger.
A preliminary injunction maintains the status quo while a case proceeds; a permanent injunction follows final judgment.
Outside law, injunction means any authoritative command or directive: parental injunctions against staying out late.
