claim
Declare as true
Claim is a noun and a verb with several related meanings that share the core idea of an assertion—either of truth or of ownership.
If you claim responsibility for something, you say that you did it or caused it to happen.
Journalists like to use the expression claim a life to mean “cause a death”: The disease devastated poultry flocks and claimed the lives of dozens of people.
If you make a claim, you assert that something is true—unless you’re making an insurance claim.
In that case, you’re asking that your insurer reimburse you an expense.
