reed

Clarinet's vibrating strip

A reed is a tall grass that grows in wetlands, with hollow stems and feathery seed heads.

The stems have practical uses—thatching, weaving, making primitive flutes.

In music, a reed is a thin strip of cane or metal that vibrates to produce sound in woodwinds and harmonicas: clarinet reed, saxophone reed.

The reed instruments are sometimes called simply the reeds.

A broken reed is something too weak to rely on.
