oboe

Double-reed woodwind

An oboe is a woodwind instrument with a double reed and a distinctively plaintive, penetrating tone.

It has a conical bore and produces sound when the player blows between two thin reeds bound together.

The oboe typically sounds the tuning note for orchestras: The oboist played an A and the strings adjusted their pitch.
