shawm

Medieval double-reed

A shawm is an early woodwind instrument with a double reed, predecessor to the modern oboe.

It produces a loud, penetrating sound that made it suitable for outdoor performances and medieval ceremonies.

The shawm was common in European music from the 12th through 17th centuries: The shawm players led the procession through the town square.
