Doorstep floor covering
As a noun, a mat is most often a floor covering, like a rug but not made of cloth.
Many mats have particular purposes (yoga mat, sleeping mat, welcome mat).
If you take someone to the mat or go to the mat with someone, you are either going to wrestle with them, or more likely, confront them aggressively.
A different mat (a variant spelling of matte) forms a border around a picture in a frame.
When you mat a picture, you fit one of these.
When hair or fur is matted, it is entangled, usually by a substance: The bear’s coat was matted with blood.
