calamus

Aromatic palm genus

Calamus is a genus of palms with long, flexible stems used to make rattan furniture and cane.

The word also refers to the sweet flag plant, whose aromatic root has been used medicinally and as a flavoring.

In anatomy, the calamus is the hollow lower portion of a feather's shaft where it attaches to the skin.

The calamus of the quill held the ink.
