chanter
Monk at vespers
A chanter is the melody pipe of a bagpipe—the one with finger holes that plays the tune while the drones sustain their continuous notes.
By extension, a chanter is someone who chants, whether leading liturgical singing or repeating slogans at a protest: The chanters grew louder as the march approached the capitol.
