Pan

Goat-legged woodland god

Pan is the Greek god of shepherds and flocks, depicted with goat legs and horns, playing his reed pipes in wild places.

His name gives us panic—the irrational fear he supposedly inspired in lonely travelers.

Pan appears in expressions like Pan's pipes and the adjective pansexual, though that prefix derives from Greek pan meaning "all." (Lowercase pan is a cooking vessel.)
