political prisoner
Incarcerated for beliefs
A political prisoner is someone imprisoned for their beliefs, speech, or activism rather than for criminal acts.
Governments may use pretextual charges—tax evasion, disturbing the peace—to jail dissidents while denying political motivation.
The term itself is contested: One country's political prisoner is another's terrorist.
Authoritarian regimes typically deny holding any.
