thrall

State of captivity

A thrall is a slave or someone in bondage—originally a person held in servitude in medieval Scandinavia.

The word now appears almost exclusively in the phrase in thrall to, meaning captivated or dominated by something: He remained in thrall to his addiction.

The state of being enslaved is thralldom.
