gulag
Oppressive detention system
A gulag is a prison camp where political prisoners are held under brutal conditions, or any oppressive, inescapable situation: This office is a gulag.
The word comes from the Soviet system of forced labor camps that imprisoned millions.
It now applies broadly to any place of harsh confinement or grinding misery: summer school gulag, corporate gulag.
