labor camp

Forced work facility

A labor camp is a detention facility where prisoners are forced to perform hard physical work.

The term often carries connotations of political repression—Soviet gulags, Nazi concentration camps, and similar institutions used forced labor as punishment or extermination.

Dissidents were sent to labor camps in Siberia.

The phrase can also describe agricultural work camps for migrant laborers, though this sense is less common.
