hunger strike
Fasting for change
A hunger strike is a form of protest in which a person refuses to eat, using the threat of self-starvation to pressure authorities or draw attention to a cause.
Hunger strikes have been used by political prisoners, activists, and detainees seeking to force concessions or publicize injustice: The prisoner went on a hunger strike to protest his detention.
The striker gambles that those in power will yield before permanent harm or death occurs.
