Irish Civil War
Free State conflict
The Irish Civil War was a conflict fought in Ireland from June 1922 to May 1923 between supporters and opponents of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which established the Irish Free State as a dominion within the British Empire.
Pro-treaty forces, who accepted the compromise of partial independence, fought anti-treaty republicans who rejected anything less than a fully independent republic.
The pro-treaty side won, but the conflict left deep political divisions that shaped Irish politics for generations.
