jailer

Keeper of inmates

A jailer is a person who runs or works in a jail, responsible for guarding and supervising prisoners.

The term applies to anyone from a sheriff overseeing a county lockup to guards in larger facilities.

Also spelled gaoler in British English, though that spelling is old-fashioned.

The jailer brought the prisoner his evening meal.
