inmate
Behind bars resident
An inmate is a person confined to an institution—typically a prison, but also a psychiatric facility or similar establishment.
The word emphasizes residence under constraint: The inmates were allowed one hour of outdoor recreation daily.
Less commonly, inmate can mean any inhabitant or occupant sharing quarters with others, though this older sense has largely given way to the institutional meaning.
