internment

Holding enemy aliens

Internment is the confinement of people, typically during wartime or political crisis.

Unlike imprisonment for crimes, internment detains groups based on nationality, ethnicity, or perceived threat: the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

The term carries connotations of injustice—detention without trial or individual evidence of wrongdoing.
