Irish War of Independence
Britain versus Ireland
The Irish War of Independence, also called the Anglo-Irish War, was a guerrilla conflict fought between 1919 and 1921 in which Irish republicans sought to end British rule in Ireland.
The Irish Republican Army conducted ambushes and raids against British forces, who responded with reprisals often carried out by auxiliary units known as the Black and Tans.
The war ended with a truce and the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which established the Irish Free State while partitioning Northern Ireland.
