samizdat

Secret Soviet publishing

Samizdat was the secret copying and distribution of banned literature in the Soviet Union, typically by hand or typewriter to evade state censorship.

The practice preserved dissident writing, religious texts, and forbidden ideas when official publication was impossible.

The term now applies to any underground or self-published material circulating outside official channels: The zine had a samizdat quality—photocopied and passed hand to hand.
