oxidation-reduction

Electron transfer reaction

Oxidation-reduction refers to chemical reactions in which electrons transfer between substances—one loses electrons (oxidation) while another gains them (reduction).

The two processes always occur together, hence the compound term.

Often shortened to redox: redox reactions, redox potential.

Rust forming on iron and batteries generating electricity are both oxidation-reduction processes.
