lead-acid

Rechargeable battery type

Lead-acid describes a type of rechargeable battery that uses lead plates and sulfuric acid to store electrical energy.

Invented in 1859, it remains the standard for automotive starting batteries and backup power systems: The car wouldn't start because the lead-acid battery was dead.

Though heavier and less energy-dense than newer technologies like lithium-ion, lead-acid batteries are inexpensive, reliable, and highly recyclable.
