oxidize

React with air

Oxidize is to combine with oxygen or, more broadly, to lose electrons in a chemical reaction.

Iron oxidizes when it rusts; cut apples oxidize when they turn brown.

The opposite process is reduction.

In everyday use, oxidize usually just means to react with air: The copper roof had oxidized to a green patina.
