galvanization

Zinc protects steel

Galvanization is the process of coating iron or steel with zinc to prevent rust and corrosion.

The term extends to any sudden stimulation or shock that spurs someone or something into action: The scandal led to the galvanization of reform efforts.

This figurative sense derives from the original meaning of galvanism—using electric current to stimulate muscles—named after the Italian scientist Luigi Galvani.

The British spelling is galvanisation.
