oculus

Circular ceiling opening

An oculus is a circular opening or window, especially one at the apex of a dome.

The most famous example is the open hole at the top of Rome's Pantheon, which admits light and rain alike.

In anatomy, oculus is a technical Latin term for the eye, appearing in medical abbreviations like OD (oculus dexter, right eye) and OS (oculus sinister, left eye).

The oculus flooded the rotunda with natural light. (Capitalized Oculus is the virtual reality brand.)
