rose

Got to feet

Rose has two unrelated uses.

One is to serve as the irregular past tense of the verb rise: A sadder and a wiser man, he rose the morrow morn.

The other is a noun that designates a family of plants (Rosaceae), and especially the genus of this family (Rosa) that comprises the showy and fragrant flowers we call roses.

The natural beauty of roses gives rise to figurative use, in which rose designates a beautiful woman or girl.

Though roses come in many colors, the color adjective rose is used for a purplish red color that is typical of the flower.
