transept

Church's horizontal arm

A transept is the section of a cross-shaped church that extends at right angles to the main body, forming the arms of the cross.

Most medieval cathedrals and many traditional churches have transepts, creating the characteristic cruciform floor plan: The congregation gathered in the north transept for the smaller service.
