conjunctiva

Eyelid's inner lining

The conjunctiva is the thin, transparent membrane that lines the inner surface of the eyelids and covers the white of the eye.

It produces mucus to lubricate the eye.

When inflamed—from infection, allergies, or irritation—the condition is conjunctivitis, commonly called pinkeye.
