macula

Eye's sharpest region

A macula is a spot or blemish, particularly a discolored patch on the skin.

In anatomy, the macula refers specifically to the macula lutea, a small yellowish area near the center of the retina responsible for sharp central vision: Macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.

The plural is maculae or maculas.
