heme

Iron-containing blood compound

Heme is the iron-containing molecule that gives blood its red color and enables hemoglobin to carry oxygen.

The iron atom at its center binds oxygen in the lungs and releases it to tissues throughout the body.

Heme appears in other proteins too, including myoglobin in muscles and cytochromes involved in cellular energy production.
