postpartum hemorrhage
After-delivery blood loss
Postpartum hemorrhage is excessive bleeding following childbirth, typically defined as blood loss exceeding 500 milliliters after vaginal delivery or 1000 milliliters after cesarean section.
It's a leading cause of maternal death worldwide.
The condition most often results from the uterus failing to contract properly after delivery, though tears or clotting disorders can also cause it: She was treated for postpartum hemorrhage after her second delivery.
