platelets

Blood clot builders

Platelets are tiny cell fragments in blood that help it clot.

When a blood vessel is injured, platelets gather at the site, stick together, and form a plug that stops bleeding.

A low platelet count can cause excessive bleeding; a high count can lead to dangerous clots.

Also called thrombocytes.
