enucleation

Taking the core

Enucleation is the surgical removal of something whole, without cutting into it.

The term most commonly refers to removing an eyeball while leaving the surrounding muscles and tissue intact, or to extracting a tumor or cyst from its capsule.

In biology, enucleation can also mean removing the nucleus from a cell.

The patient underwent enucleation after the tumor could not be treated by other means.
