hemoglobin

Iron-rich blood protein

Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and returns carbon dioxide to the lungs.

Its iron content gives blood its red color.

Low hemoglobin levels indicate anemia: Her hemoglobin was dangerously low after the surgery.

Also spelled haemoglobin in British English.
