cyanide

Lethal chemical compound

Cyanide is a rapidly acting poison that prevents cells from using oxygen.

The term covers several compounds containing a carbon-nitrogen group—most notoriously hydrogen cyanide (the gas used in Nazi death chambers) and potassium cyanide (the crystalline salt of spy capsules and murder mysteries).

Despite its lethal reputation, cyanide has industrial uses in mining, metallurgy, and chemical synthesis.

The detective suspected cyanide when he smelled bitter almonds.
