handpress

Hand-operated printing machine

A handpress is a printing press operated manually rather than by mechanical or electrical power.

The operator applies pressure by turning a screw or pulling a lever, pressing paper against an inked surface to create an impression.

Handpresses were the standard technology for printing from Gutenberg's era through the early nineteenth century and remain in use today for fine art printing, letterpress work, and bookbinding.

She produced limited-edition broadsides on a nineteenth-century handpress.
