anvil

Hammer's sturdy partner

An anvil is a heavy iron or steel block with a flat top on which metal is hammered and shaped.

Blacksmiths place hot metal on the anvil and strike it with a hammer to forge tools, horseshoes, and other objects.

The characteristic shape—flat working surface with a pointed horn at one end—has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Figuratively, something caught between the hammer and the anvil faces pressure from two sides.
