clamp

Adjustable jaw gripper

A clamp is a device that holds things tightly together or in place, typically with two parts that can be squeezed or screwed shut: Use a clamp to hold the boards while the glue dries.

To clamp is to fasten with such a device, or to press firmly: She clamped her hand over his mouth.

To clamp down is to impose restrictions or enforce rules more strictly: The government clamped down on illegal gambling.
