debossing

Sunken surface imprint

Debossing is the technique of pressing a design into a surface so it sits below the surrounding area—the opposite of embossing, which raises the design.

The effect is most common on paper, leather, and book covers, where it creates subtle, tactile impressions: The company logo was debossed into the leather journal cover.
