galleys

Ancient rowing vessels

Galleys are the plural of galley, a word with two main meanings.

A galley is a long, low ship propelled mainly by oars, used in ancient and medieval warfare: Greek galleys rammed enemy vessels.

A galley is also a ship's kitchen, and by extension any compact or narrow kitchen.

In publishing, galleys are preliminary printed proofs of text, used for proofreading before final production: The editor marked up the galleys.
