prep

Getting ready, briefly

Prep means to prepare or make ready.

In cooking, prep work involves cutting vegetables, measuring ingredients, and organizing before actual cooking begins: I spent an hour prepping for dinner.

In medicine, to prep a patient is to ready them for surgery.

The noun refers to this preparatory work: The prep takes longer than the cooking.

Prep can also mean a preparatory school or its culture—the preppy style of dress and manner associated with elite private schools: He went to prep in New England. (Capitalized PREP is an HIV prevention medication.)
