ships of the line
Naval combat heavyweights
Ships of the line were the largest warships of the age of sail, powerful enough to hold position in the line of battle—the standard naval formation where fleets engaged broadside to broadside.
These vessels carried sixty to over a hundred cannons on multiple gun decks.
The term became obsolete with the transition to steam-powered ironclads in the mid-nineteenth century.
