great halls
Castle dining rooms
Great halls are the principal rooms in medieval castles, manor houses, and institutional buildings—large ceremonial spaces where communal meals, gatherings, and official business took place.
The lord's family dined on a raised platform while servants and retainers ate below.
Universities preserve the tradition: Dinner in the great hall is formal on Sundays.
The term now applies to any imposing central hall in a grand building.
