bireme

Ancient double-decked warship

A bireme is an ancient warship powered by two tiers of oars on each side, one above the other.

These vessels were used throughout the Mediterranean, particularly by Greeks and Phoenicians, before being superseded by the larger trireme with its three banks of oars.

The bireme cut swiftly through the harbor waters.
