men-of-war

Armed naval ships

Men-of-war is the plural of man-of-war, an armed naval vessel, especially a sailing warship of the 17th through 19th centuries.

The term evokes the age of wooden ships with multiple gun decks and billowing sails.

A Portuguese man-of-war, despite the name, is not a ship but a marine organism resembling a jellyfish, with long stinging tentacles trailing beneath a gas-filled bladder that floats on the surface.
