Barbary pirates

North African corsairs

Barbary pirates were Muslim corsairs operating from North Africa's Barbary Coast—primarily Morocco, Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli—from the sixteenth through early nineteenth centuries.

They raided Mediterranean shipping and European coastal towns, capturing slaves and extracting tribute from nations seeking safe passage.

The young United States fought two Barbary Wars (1801–1805, 1815) after refusing to pay protection money, giving rise to the Marine Corps hymn's "shores of Tripoli."
