alarm
Sudden fearful concern
Alarm is a warning signal or the fear it provokes.
An alarm alerts you to danger—a fire alarm, a burglar alarm, a alarm clock rousing you from sleep.
The emotional response is also alarm: The news caused widespread alarm.
To alarm someone is to frighten or disturb them: I don't want to alarm you, but there's smoke coming from the kitchen.
False alarms trigger the warning without real danger.
