temper

Mood toward anger

Temper as a noun usually refers to a general or habitual state of mind (calm temper), but without a modifier, may suggest a tendency to anger: Watch out, she’s got a temper.

The verb temper has a range of meanings, many of which relate to its original sense, moderate.

Something that tempers your optimism or enthusiasm weakens it.

Some technical processes that stabilize a substance also use temper to describe the action: Chocolate must be tempered to make it glossy and smooth for dipping.
